Simple Exercise ( involving a business decision)

Proposed purchase of a car for business travel

Philip is an immigrant to Canada from the Philippines. Back in his home country he was running a successful small grocery business and to make it big, he moved over to Canada in 1997. Ever since he landed in Canada, he was consumed by this desire to open a chain of grocery stores carrying his name. However success wasn’t coming too easy, given the intense competition from the established brand names with the new up and coming Chinese entrepreneurs.

Putting to use all his resourcefulness, he managed to survive in the past 8 years and since 2005, he figured out the formula for success in this business. His business began to grow and in 2006 he managed to open his second store in Toronto. Philip was frugal in his spending for his personal needs and had preferred instead to invest all his income back in the business to make it grow. Till recently he was using a preowned pickup truck, which did double duty as a pickup truck for his business and as well his personal transportation vehicle.

However now that he has established, he decided to reward himself for his success. Besides he was aware that he has an image to maintain, given his recent elite club membership. So he wanted to buy a luxury car, but the entrepreneur in him chose to get the biggest bang for his buck. He wanted the most comfortable, reliable, economical and practical car that he can buy. He was very confused with all the choices available and all the well meaning advices he received from his friends.

To make a professional choice, he turned to Toronto Tuners for advice. Kyle at Toronto Tuners listened carefully to Philip’s requirements, narrowed down his recommendation to just four makes and models: BMW 5-series 550xi, Audi A6 4.2 quattro, Lexus GS 450h hybrid, and Mercedes S-Class S550.

Kyle listed his client’s needs, assigned appropriate weightage for these factors. Then taking into consideration relative merits of these models for these factors, he made the workbook titled Toronto Tuners.

Click here to view the workbook.

As you can see the workbook is made of two sheets, the first is the Title Sheet followed by the sheet named Car Selection. Click on Car Selection to see its contents.

The spreadsheet gives the factors such as quality, fuel economy, cost etc that are important to Philip and the importance that Philip attaches to these factors. For instance Fuel Economy and Intitial Cost are more important for him compared to manufacturing quality. So they are assigned a weightage of 10 points and manufacturing quality is given 7 points.

Raw scores for each of these factors are listed on the side for each car. For instance when it comes to overall design quality, raw score for Audi A6 is 5 and Mercedes S550 gets 3. And Philip thinks superior design as the next most important thing to him after cost. So Kyle gives it a weightage of 9 out of a maximum of 10.

So the weighted score for design quality for Audi A6 is 9X5 = 45 while, it is 9X3 = 27 for Mercedes S550. From the aggregate weighted scores, one could see Lexus GS 450h has the highest score of 461.5 while Audi A6 follows it with 388.5. The chart below gives the same information pictorially.

So Kyle recommends Philip that Lexus GS 450h as his first choice, with Audi A6 as his next best.
